A facial cleanser is a facial care product which is used to remove make-up, dead skin cells, oils, dirt and other types of impurities from the skin of the face. Using a facial cleanser will further help to unclog pores and prevent skin conditions such as acne. Usually, facial cleansers are used as part of a skin care regimen together with toners and moisturizers. Using a cleanser is seen to remove dirt better than bar soaps. Bar soaps are actually not advised for use on the face because they have a high pH way higher than that of the skin; They have thickeners which allow them to assume their bar shape therefore these thickeners can easily clog the pores and lead to acne; they remove natural oils from the skin. These cleansers come in the form of creams, milks, liquids, foams, oils, gels and lotions.
Dry skin: Avoid using foaming cleansers and stick to ones that are more moisturizing. Also consider using oil-based cleansers.
Oily skin: You don't have to use foaming cleansers although it would be better that you used those. Also stay away from drying medicated facial washes and stick to mild, gentle cleansers.
Sensitive skin: Avoid cleansers with acids, fragrances, dyes and other harsh ingredients.
Bar soaps: Although these are not advisable, you can however get a very mild bar soap with a low pH capacity and since bar soaps tend to be more drying, they are quite suitable for people with oily skin types.
Foaming cleansers: This type of facial cleanser can also be quite drying and so oily-skinned people can use this. These cleansers are the type that last the longest as just a very little amount makes a lot of lather. They can come in gel form or cream form and it is not advisable for dry-skinned people to use them.
Non-forming cleansers: They are usually gel or lotion and they are gentle on the skin. They are made for sensitive skin types and eczema prone skin. This type of cleanser is known for being unable to effectively remove make-up and sun screen. They are also great for people with dry skin.
Cleansing balm: They are either cream or oil-based and they are used to remove make-up. They are also ideal for dry-skinned people. Cream balms look like thick cold creams while the oil balm looks like petroleum jelly with the consistency. These balms are solid at room temperature but they liquefy when in contact with body heat. They are great for removing make-up, sunscreen, etc and they usually leave an oily residue after cleaning off.
Micellar: These are also known as cleansing waters. They have a very watery consistency and they almost look like a cleansing toner. To use a micellar, you dab some of the solution on a cotton pad and you clean the face with the cotton pad to remove oil and dirt.
Medicated cleanser: These are cleansers in any of the above forms which are made mainly for acne-prone skin. They have either salicylic acid to help unclog pores or benzoyl peroxide to help kill bacteria. These two are active ingredients. Most medicated cleansers are usually too harsh.
