Jumia Marketvarsity Workshop Starts on a High
November 12, 2014 | Kampala, Uganda

Jumia MarketVarsity got off to a terrific start with the first sessions happening on the 4th, 5th and 6th of November 2014 with the theme of "Treat your online shop like your real shop". Held at the Jumia Market downtown offices at People's plaza on Ben Kiwanuka street, the Jumia MarketVarsity's main purpose is to educate sellers already on the platform on how to fully maximize their online stores in order to achieve higher sales. Over 100 of the top sellers on Jumia Market have been invited to attend the Jumia MarketVarsity sessions following the successful Jumia MarketVarsity launch event which was held at the Grand Imperial Hotel on 29th October.

The Jumia Market downtown office was switched to a classroom style setting, with the Jumia Market seller managers delivering a short interactive presentation to the sellers they manage and had invited. Sellers were also given hard copies of the material that was covered in the presentation which they can always refer to at a later stage, accompanied by a Jumia Market notebook, pen and sticker. The first sessions covered the basics of every online account with the goal of getting the sellers to be more self-reliant. The sellers were taught how to login into their accounts, view their sales, update the products they had in their online store and add new products to their online store, all without the help of Jumia Market staff. "The plan is that at the end of all the sessions, the sellers will be able to do everything themselves from adding new products to their online store to processing orders and organizing delivery" said Justin Christianson, Managing Director of Jumia Market Uganda.

"Currently Jumia Market assists all the sellers with every step of the process since online retail is a completely new concept to most of the sellers. However for the business to be sustainable we need the sellers to control a part if not all of the process, and that's what we are trying to achieve through these sessions" stated Justin.

"I had no idea so many people were viewing my online shop!" said Liz from Liz Enterprises after she found out that she had over 17000 page views. Liz Enterprise based in Grand Corner House on William Street sells electronic gadgets such as MP3 players and headphones, she won the 1st place at the Top Seller Awards during the Jumia MarketVarsity Launch. "I need to start uodating my stock faster to keep my customers happy" stated Brian from Eseru Phones, a seller of mobile phones and accessories at Kisenyi Bus Park after he found out he had lost his position as top seller, a position he held for 2 weeks. "The more you handle your orders and sell, the more Jumia Market will promote you" advised Tony from MTS Enterprise, a seller of men's shoes.

All in all, the feedback from the sellers who attended the first 3 sessions has been very positive. The sellers are very excited about having the opportunity to learn and expand their businesses through e-commerce. The next sessions for the next batch of sellers shall be held on the 11th, 12th and 13th of November, and based on how the first 3 have gone, the Jumia Market team in Uganda is confident that the reception will be equally as good, if not better.
