The Importance of Music

Music is a form of art and entertainment which puts sounds together in a way that people enjoy. Music production includes singing with one's voice and making music with instruments. Music touches the soul and it is capable of uniting people emotionally. It also has therapeutic effects. Moreover, this form of art can be very engaging in a classroom setting as it is a great tool for memorization. It is also universal as there are no boundaries to understanding its forms and styles. Types of Music

Music comes in a variety of types. These types are called genres. A genre of music is a category which identifies pieces of music as belonging to a shared set of musical conventions. There are so many types of music available.

Blues: This is a musical form which originated in the African American communities in the United States at the end of the 19th century. Types of blues include Delta blues; piedmont blues also known as East Coast blues, jump blues, Chicago blues, etc.

Classical music: This is an art music rooted in the traditions of Western music and types of classical music are symphony, opera, choral, chamber music, Gregorian chant, Madrigals, and many others.

Country music: This is a genre of American popular music which originated in the Southern United States in the 1920s. It originated from the southeastern genre of American folk music and Western music. Types of country music include early country music, blue grass music, traditional country music, cowboy and western music, country rock, Nashville sound, Texas country, contemporary country, and many more.

Electronic music: This is a type of music which employs electronic musical instruments and electronic music technology in its production. The first electronic devices for performing music were developed at the end of the 19th century. The term today suggests that the character and quality of the music is synthetic as the music is created by electronics instead of performance by acoustic instruments. Types of electronic music are ambient, electronica, electronic rock, hard dance, jungle, post-disco, trance music, UK garage and many others.

Jazz: This is a music genre originated from the African American communities of New Orleans in the United States in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. It came up in the form of independent traditional and popular musical styles. Although the foundation of jazz is deeply rooted within the black experience of the United States, different cultures have brought their own experience and style into the genre. Types of jazz include New Orleans jazz, the Chicago style, bebop, fusion jazz music and many others.

Rap: This is the art of speaking rhyming lyrics and this is performed in time to a beat. It originated among African Americans' inner-street culture in the 70's. Types of rap music include gangsta rap, alternative rap, political rap, crunk and many others.

Reggae: This is a musical genre which originated in Jamaica in the late 60's. Some types of reggae include roots, dub, lover's rock, slack dancehall, conscious dancehall.

Rhythm and blues: This genre is popularly known as R&B. This is a genre of music originated in the 1940's by African Americans. This genre combines elements of blues, soul, funk, pop, hip hop and dance. Types of RnB are Motown, funk, disco, jump blues, and many others.

Rock: This is a genre of popular music which originates as rock and roll. It originated in the United States in the 50's. Some types of rock music include rock n roll, garage rock, punk rock, glam rock and southern rock.
