Deodorants

A deodorant is a substance which removes or conceals unpleasant smells, especially body odours. Body odours are caused by the bacterial breakdown of perspiration in the armpits, feet and other parts of the body. Human perspiration is normally odourless; however, it can be fermented by bacteria which thrive in hot, humid environments. When perspiration is fermented, it then gives off an unpleasant odour. Deodorants are therefore designed to eliminate this unpleasant odour by temporarily killing these bacteria. Deodorants are often alcohol-based and this alcohol temporarily kills the bacteria which ferment perspiration to cause body odours. Deodorants come in a variety of different formulas and methods of application. The most common types come in solid stick, gel, roll-on, liquid, cream, powder, and spray formulas. Some people prefer to go for natural deodorants which may come in form of stones or minerals and which are meant to be rubbed on the underarms. Stick and powder deodorants are considered dry deodorants because they do not leave the skin wet after application. Stick deodorants are usually solid white or clear deodorants which are to be rubbed on the armpits. Powder deodorant is sprinkled or patted on the armpit; it is usually made with the same ingredients as the stick deodorant only that it is made without the silicone or fatty substances which bind the ingredients together.

How to Control Body Odour

This is an unpleasant smell which the body gives off when bacteria that lives on the skin break down sweat into acids. People who are more susceptible to having body odour are people who are obese, people who regularly consume spicy food, people who sweat too much, people with certain medical conditions amongst others. Generally, each person's unique body odour can be influenced by diet, gender, health, medication, lifestyle, etc. Here are certain steps to take which may control that nasty body odour.

Body care: Make sure to have a thorough bath at least twice a day – morning and night. Warm water helps kill bacteria which are present on the skin, therefore, you may decide to bath with warm, not hot water. You may also use anti-bacterial soap or body wash. However, if the weather is warm, consider bathing more than twice a day if you can find the time to do that.

Clothing: Make sure to always wear clean clothes and wear clothes in lighter materials in warmer or hotter weathers.

Food: Avoid taking too much of spicy foods such as curry, hot peppers, onions, garlic, etc as these tend to make you sweat more. Moreover, drinks with caffeine and alcohol will cause you to sweat more.

Personal care: Get a long-lasting deodorant and if your feet are the cause of this issue, you may get foot powder to tackle this. Deodorants do not prevent sweating but they are able to mask the smell of bacteria on your skin. You can also get antiperspirants. They contain aluminium chloride which is a chemical that reduces sweating. Antiperspirants usually contain deodorants.

Shave: Make sure to shave your underarm regularly. This helps prevent the accumulation of bacteria. Shaving your underarm will also reduce sweat and odour.
