The story centers on the poor peasant family of Kĩgũũnda and Wangeci, who aspire to improve their social standing through their daughter Gathoni's potential marriage to the son of a wealthy and hypocritical landowner, Ahab Kioi wa Kanoru. The Kiois, however, manipulate the family into mortgaging their land to pay for a Christian wedding, eventually leading to Kĩgũũnda losing his land and job after Gathoni is jilted.
Major themes include:
-Class struggle and exploitation: The play highlights the deep divisions between the impoverished workers and the rich, who often serve foreign interests.
-Neocolonialism and corruption: It serves as a sharp criticism of how African leaders betrayed the aspirations of independence by continuing exploitative economic policies.
-Religion and culture: The authors use the conflict between traditional values and the new, often hypocritical, Christian practices to explore cultural imperialism
