The novel follows Max Skinner, a London financial firm employee who loses his job and inherits his late uncle's vineyard in Provence, France. Upon arrival, he discovers the climate and food are delightful, but the wine produced on the property is initially disappointing. The plot thickens with the arrival of a beguiling Californian woman who may have a legitimate claim to the estate. It is a story that blends business with the pleasures of wine and the south of France, which was also adapted into a movie.
