The book follows the crew of the starship Mobius, a group of lovable outlaws in the 26th century space-fantasy setting known as the "Black Ocean". They take a seemingly simple, high-paying job: a "no questions asked" delivery. The problem arises when their curiosity gets the better of them, and they look inside the sealed cargo. The crew is then faced with a moral dilemma, forcing them to choose between profit and doing the right thing, a decision that leads to the "stupidest, most reckless, and least profitable course of action they could possibly take".
