The novel tells the story of two families from vastly different socioeconomic backgrounds in Nashville, whose lives become intertwined after a controversial incident. 

• Nina Browning is a wealthy woman whose son, Finch, has just been accepted to Princeton. 

• Tom Talone is a single father working multiple jobs to send his daughter, Lyla, to a prestigious private high school on scholarship. 

A scandal erupts when Finch takes a demeaning photo of a passed-out, half-naked Lyla at a party and shares it on social media with a racist caption. As the photo spreads, the community is polarized, and both families are forced to confront issues of privilege, race, and loyalty, questioning their assumptions about right and wrong.
