Product details

Carnation seeds are tiny, dark, and irregularly shaped, resembling small, jagged chips of black or brown pepper. They are found inside a dry, round seedpod that forms after the flower has wilted.

Physical characteristics

Color: The seeds are black or dark brown. Non-viable seeds may appear green or light brown.

Size: Carnation seeds are very small, often described as about the size of a fleck of cracked black pepper.

Shape: They have a slight curve to their shape and a somewhat jagged edge, like tiny potato chips.

Texture: The seeds are firm and have a shiny, bullet-like appearance.

General growing information

Carnation seeds grow into fragrant, ruffly flowers known for their wide range of colors and long-lasting blooms.

Botanical name: Dianthus caryophyllus.

Sunlight needs: Grow best in full sun (6–8 hours of direct sun) but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hot climates.

Soil requirements: Prefer well-draining, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. They do not tolerate soggy or waterlogged conditions.

Growth habit: Plants form low tufts of blue-green, grass-like foliage, with upright, wiry stems holding the blooms.

Growing methods:

Indoors: Sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date for flowers in the same year.

Direct sowing: Sow thinly outdoors in mid-summer for flowers to bloom the following year.
