Devil on the Cross, originally written in Gikuyu as Caitaani Mutharaba-Ini and later translated into English by the author himself, is a bold and allegorical novel that exposes the greed, corruption, and exploitation of Kenya's post-colonial elite. Set in Ilmorog, the same fictional town from Petals of Blood, the novel follows Jacinta Wariinga, a young woman who has suffered from societal oppression and betrayal, as she journeys from despair to political and personal awakening.
The novel revolves around a satirical "Devil's Feast" where the "Devil's disciples" — local and foreign exploiters — gather to boast about how they rob the poor. Ngũgĩ uses sharp irony, oral storytelling techniques, and revolutionary fervor to call for collective resistance against neocolonialism and capitalist oppression.
