Product details

For decades, the business world operated on a simple, ruthless assumption: nice guys finish last. To get ahead, you had to be a shark—competitive, self-serving, and ready to prioritize your interests above all others. Adam Grant, a top organizational psychologist, dismantles this belief entirely in his revolutionary book, Give and Take: Why Helping Others Drives Our Success. Through rigorous research and captivating stories of everyone from famous Hollywood writers to top-performing salespeople and CEOs, Grant proves that the people at the very top of the success ladder are not takers or matchers—they are givers

This book will fundamentally change how you view networking, collaboration, influence, and even talent assessment. It reveals that generosity, when practiced intelligently, is the single most powerful driver of long-term success and fulfillment. If you are ready to build a career where helping others creates a ripple effect of shared success and you are genuinely rooted for by those around you, Give and Take is your essential roadmap to building influence, trust, and a life of impact.

Key Concepts of the Book

The Three Reciprocity Styles: Grant identifies three fundamental styles of interaction:

  • Takers: Self-focused individuals who aim to get more than they give, putting their own interests ahead of others' needs.
  • Matchers: Strive for a balance of giving and receiving on a quid pro quo basis ("If you do something for me, I'll do something for you").
  • Givers: People who prefer to give more than they get, offering time, energy, and knowledge without expecting immediate repayment.

  • Givers Are at Both Extremes: The surprising finding is that givers make up both the least successful and the most successful groups. The givers who land at the bottom are selfless—burning themselves out by sacrificing their own needs completely. The successful givers are "otherish": they care deeply about others' interests but maintain strong ambition for themselves, ensuring they avoid exploitation and burnout.
  • Networking as Nurturing: Givers build vast, high-trust networks by focusing on how they can add value to others, even to "weak ties" or dormant connections they haven't spoken to in years. This builds a reservoir of goodwill, leading others (especially matchers) to champion their success and offer support later on.
  • The Power of Powerless Communication: Takers try to influence through dominance and assertive language. Givers often use "powerless communication" (asking questions, seeking advice, showing vulnerability). This approach builds trust, encourages collaboration, and is remarkably persuasive because it makes people feel heard and respected, rather than dominated.
  • Weeding Out Takers: To create a thriving, giving culture, the most important step isn't just hiring givers—it's actively removing the takers. The negative impact of one taker can be double or triple the positive impact of a giver, as takers erode trust and force matchers and givers to become more self-protective.
  • Protecting Yourself from Burnout: Successful givers "chunk" their acts of kindness into specific time blocks rather than sprinkling help randomly throughout the day. They also ensure they can see the impact of their giving, which acts as a powerful buffer against exhaustion and maintains motivation.
