The Girl Who Became Chief tells the inspirational story of Isoka Kadogo, an intelligent and resourceful ten-year-old girl.
The people of her village, who live near the majestic Mt. Elgon, are paralyzed by fear of a fierce, ugly monster that terrorizes their land. Despite the efforts of the village's strongest and best hunters, none can defeat the creature.
Kadogo, however, possesses a sharp mind that proves to be a greater weapon than any spear. She uses a clever trick to outwit and kill the monster. Overjoyed and astonished by her bravery and intelligence, the community disregards tradition and makes the ten-year-old girl their new Chief.
This short reader is an excellent text promoting themes of critical thinking, female empowerment, and the idea that wisdom and courage are more valuable than physical strength.
